Diagnosis of Intracranial Arterial Stenosis and Occlusion with Transcranial Doppler
Ahn Seong-Hwan

Abstract
Intracranial arterial stenosis is a common and an important risk factor of ischemic stroke. Development of variable treatment options require definitive criteria for stenosis degree and follows up diagnostic tool. In this regard, transcranial Doppler may be a useful and reliable method which evaluates a stenosis of intracranial cerebral arteries. Contrary to extra-cranial carotid stenosis, there are no generally accepted criteria to diagnosis. However, in recent studies, suggested transcranial Doppler criteria to diagnose the intracranial arterial stenosis through variable information (velocity, flow shape, and presence of collaterals) are comparable with diagnostic criteria by conventional angiography, CT angiography, or MR angiography. Large clinical trials for international accepted criteria are required.
